Underwriting Technician, Excess Casualty

About the role

Sompo has a unique opportunity for an Underwriting Technician on our Excess Casualty team. Our Excess Casualty team brings extensive expertise and maintains strong, long-standing relationships with a select group of appointed retail brokers. We provide a consistent underwriting approach and efficient turnaround times and are supported by an experienced claims team. We operate through a network of retail brokers who value long-term partnerships supported by a strong and reliable service commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist underwriters with reviewing submissions, preparing Workbooks, drafting quotes, binders, policies, endorsements, and workflows.
  • Prepare, review, and process binders, policies, and endorsements in accordance with final binders and established processing standards.
  • Contact external distribution partners to obtain any required or outstanding underwriting information—both pre- and post-binding—to ensure complete and accurate file documentation, while implementing and maintaining a field service reputation recognized as superior in the industry.
  • Ensure all underwriting activities comply with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements while monitoring in-office workflow to meet management-defined service level agreements.
  • Review and analyze facultative reinsurance certificates as directed by management, while identifying and resolving premium discrepancies by partnering with accounting to address and settle overdue balances.
  • Maintain file integrity by ensuring all necessary documents are properly filed in ImageRight, while supporting file audits through ongoing file reviews and QA/QC processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years of Insurance Industry experience as a technical/underwriting assistant with similar duties is preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and understand terminology, coverages and appetite for specific industry groups and customers.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to work as a team, supporting internal and external customers.
  • Comfortable challenging norms while collaborating with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products, Nitro Pro, Image Right and Adobe Acrobat.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Experience with insurance underwriting processes and procedures.
  • Understanding of insurance policies, coverages, and risk assessment.

Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of insurance industry regulations and compliance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Pay

Salary Range: $55,000 - $100,000. Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.

Schedule

Full-time position based out of our New York, NY office.
