Underwriting and Commercial Clearance Counsel

Location: Hoboken office; this position may be eligible for a 2-day-per-week hybrid work scenario at the sole discretion of the Supervisor, following on-boarding and training.

About the Role

In this role, the National Underwriting and Commercial Clearance Counsel follows established industry and company guidelines to determine and execute the most effective and efficient method to support national commercial real estate transaction closings. National Commercial Services (NCS) transactions typically include multiple parties, sites, and locations, and involve complex underwriting requirements. The position ensures assigned pre-closing, closing, and post-closing activities are completed accurately, timely, and in a legally compliant manner.

Responsibilities

• Provide title insurance underwriting support for national commercial real estate transactions closed by the NCS offices in Hoboken, NJ, and New York City.
• Review documents, deeds, mortgages, court orders, decrees, regulations, and other legal instruments for legal sufficiency.
• Provide written approval for transactions exceeding single risk liability limits.
• Offer guidance and direction on general underwriting matters and assist in closing transactions as needed.
• Support claims, continuing education, and compliance with state regulations concerning title insurance.
• Save electronic copies of relevant underwriting proofs, approvals, and the basis for underwriting decisions.
• Participate in continuing education opportunities.
• Take initiative to learn and grow as a team member.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor; active and current member of a State Bar.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in an underwriting position; 10+ years preferred.
• Extensive experience with multi-state, multi-property commercial title projects.
• Strong knowledge of commercial insurance coverage and real estate terminology.
• Familiarity with NYC and NY State title insurance is a plus.
• Ability to explain decision-making processes and provide guidance to production team members.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex legal documents.
• Ability to apply logic or legal principles to a wide variety of complex problems.
• Knowledge of the title insurance industry, including its products, policies, and endorsements.

Pay

The estimated pay range for this position is $200,000 - $275,000. Factors determining the actual pay rate may include education, training, experience, seniority, merit, work performance, quantity or quality of production, regional differences in compensation, local minimum wages, or ability and effort.
