Underwriter II
About the Role
This position is responsible for generating rate proposals for new business and renewal cases across medical, pharmacy, and ancillary products at Capital Blue Cross and its subsidiary companies. The role involves pricing alternate benefit sets, assessing utilization, evaluating large claimant impacts, and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Actuarial, Sales, Clinical, and IT&D. As a consultant, the position provides advice to Sales and Account Executives, presents information to groups and brokers, and offers financial insights on insurance arrangements.
Responsibilities
- Prepares rate quotations for prospect groups, rate renewals, benefit change quotes, and ancillary coverage quotes based on Capital Blue Cross underwriting and rating requirements.
- Presents rate exceptions with analysis and recommendations for management approval.
- Consults with Sales, Sales Management, and Underwriting Management to support prospect and renewal rate actions.
- Supports Sales by justifying calculations through exhibits and analyses.
- Designs, modifies, and programs minor applications for rating structures and actuarial analyses, typically under Senior Underwriter or Team Lead guidance.
- Reviews and approves financial contract language for sold and renewing groups.
- Accompanies Senior Underwriter, Team Lead, and department management on account calls to present renewals and rate quotations.
- Assists in developing unique settlement and financing arrangements outside standard guidelines.
- Provides training, guidance, and peer review to Underwriter I team members.
Qualifications
- 2 years of underwriting and/or risk management experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, finance, economics, statistics, accounting, or a related field.
Skills
- Ability to abstract insurance mechanisms into mathematical structures and determine financial consequences.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical issues and consultative approaches.
- Proficiency in applications and software used in the rating process.
Knowledge
- Familiarity with Capital Blue Cross rating policies, procedures, and theoretical insurance structures.
- Knowledge of formulae used in rating, underwriting, and reserving processes.
- Understanding of Capital Blue Cross organizational structures and operations.
