Brief Summary of Role
Obie is seeking an innovative and experienced individual to join our underwriting team. The ideal candidate will combine insurance know-how with innovative technology to achieve bottom line success for the programs managed.
What You'll Do
- Facilitate underwriting processes and make risk-based decisions to maintain profitability and integrity of the book of business
- Review property inspection reports, photographs, and documentation to identify hazards, condition concerns, eligibility issues, and discrepancies
- Determine appropriate underwriting actions based on inspection findings, including identifying when additional information, remediation, policy changes, cancellation, or non-renewal may be necessary
- Document inspection findings and underwriting decisions clearly and consistently within applicable systems
- Maintain oversight of relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and book performance within your assigned territory, reacting to emerging indicators and recommending solutions when needed
- Apply underwriting guidelines and use sound judgment when evaluating property risks, escalating risks or exceptions outside of established authority when appropriate
- Identify procedural efficiencies and continuously evolve underwriting best practices
- Collaborate cross-functionally to identify trends or recurring issues found through inspections and other underwriting activity that may impact risk selection, guidelines, or portfolio performance
- Collaborate with Third Party Administrators (TPAs) to help manage and monitor post-loss activity
- Contribute to a culture of ownership, collaboration, positive reinforcement, and accountability to yourself, the team, and the company
What You'll Bring
- 2+ years of experience in P&C property underwriting
- Experience reviewing property inspections and using inspection findings to make or recommend underwriting decisions
- A strong understanding of property risk characteristics, hazards, condition concerns, and their impact on eligibility and underwriting decisions
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess performance and P&L within a book of business
- A strong attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies across applications, policy information, inspection reports, photographs, and supporting documentation
- Experience and comfort using a variety of tools, including Excel, Google Workspace, and policy management systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly document and communicate underwriting decisions
- Sound judgment and confidence making decisions independently while recognizing when escalation is appropriate
- Adaptability in a fast-moving, evolving environment with the ability to manage multiple priorities at once
- The ability to prioritize competing demands and manage time effectively
