About the role

Raytheon’s Systems Engineering and Test Capabilities (SE&TC) Surface Radars & Sensors Center in Portsmouth, RI is seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer with a focus on ocean engineering. The team supports naval undersea and surface programs, including sensor systems, mine countermeasures, submarines, torpedoes, combat systems, and ship architecture/integration. Engineers perform underwater acoustics analysis and tracking, develop and manage system requirements, integrate hardware and software, create test plans and procedures, debug and evaluate system functions and interfaces, and verify requirements for final customer sell‑off. This role serves as a subject‑matter expert tackling highly complex problems with minimal oversight, while coaching and reviewing the work of team members.

Responsibilities

• Perform system performance evaluations and in‑depth analysis to identify opportunities for new functionality and system enhancements.
• Contribute to the development of new procedures, processes, and standards to enhance team performance and project outcomes.
• Create or modify documentation in support of formal testing reviews (Test Readiness Review, Consent to Ship, Test Data Review packages) and effectively communicate results to leadership and stakeholders.
• Demonstrate the ability to multitask and manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
• Overcome obstacles by proactively identifying potential roadblocks, negotiating changes to ensure project success, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to drive alignment and resolve conflicts.
• Travel domestically and internationally to support customer events, with an expected travel requirement not exceeding 25%.

Requirements

• Active and transferable U.S. government‑issued security clearance required prior to start date.
• U.S. citizenship required (only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance).
• Ability to obtain an interim U.S. government‑issued security clearance prior to start date.
• DoD Secret clearance level.
• Onsite work arrangement.

Qualifications

Must have:

• A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
• Minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience.
• Experience with underwater acoustics analysis, sensor systems, and/or naval system development.
• Experience with system integration and/or test.

Preferred:

• Experience breaking down complex problems, analyzing data effectively, and identifying actionable solutions while maintaining a sharp focus on details.
• Experience identifying root causes of system failures through detailed diagnostics, implementing timely fixes, and developing preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
• Experience analyzing system performance metrics and applying optimization techniques to enhance efficiency and functionality.
• Experience understanding when tasks and deliverables are completed within allocated financial resources while maintaining alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
• Experience developing testing procedures, reports, and troubleshooting complex systems.
