About the role

Detroit Salt Company is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator (Haul Truck Driver) to transport salt and other materials within the mine. This role includes loading, hauling, and unloading materials in a timely and efficient manner while adhering to all safety regulations and operational procedures. The position requires excellent driving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in an underground environment.

Responsibilities

• Work responsibly and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations
• Stay alert to hazards and changing conditions on all mine property
• Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently underground, including haul trucks in all areas of the underground mining operation
• Perform basic conveyor, crusher, and screen deck maintenance and adjustments, including changing idlers, screens, greasing bearings, replacing guarding, and clearing dump chutes
• Perform basic service to mobile equipment, including adding fluids, removing/replacing covers, and greasing
• Assist maintenance department with maintenance tasks under the direction of maintenance personnel
• Operate other equipment and perform other duties in mining/crushing/screening/support functions
• Inspect finished work and ensure required specifications are met
• Inspect and perform daily routine housekeeping to ensure a clean and safe work area
• Complete assigned paperwork accurately and on time; keep accurate records of mining data
• Communicate with management, supervisor, and others regarding safety and production concerns
• Cross-train and multi-task with varied skill sets and functions
• Uphold company and MSHA rules and regulations
• Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Preferred experience in heavy equipment such as wheeled loader, skid steer, or articulated truck
• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Demonstrated mechanical and electrical skills preferred
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills
• High degree of attention required to prevent injury to self and coworkers and promote a safe workplace
• Ability to speak, comprehend, and read English
• Ability to attend work on a regular schedule
• Ability to pass physical and drug test

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work safely in varying temperatures in a production/warehouse workplace and outside year-round
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly
• Compliance with and wearing of all required PPE
