Underground Utilities Superintendent

About the role

The Superintendent is responsible for interacting with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive, and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The role requires the aptitude to anticipate problems, critical issues, and opportunities, along with the capability to creatively solve and bring together viable solutions. The Superintendent will provide coordination, planning, and supervision to Foremen while developing and enhancing customer relationships through excellent service.

Responsibilities

• Planning and implementation to ensure all materials, equipment, and inspections support the project schedule.
• Reviewing construction documents for completeness and constructability.
• Reviewing and understanding contract documents.
• Coordinating plans and specifications with design engineers, resolving discrepancies.
• Participating in the development and management of a project schedule, including three- and six-week look-ahead schedules.
• Developing a site logistics plan.
• Managing the utilization of company tools, equipment, and materials.
• Collaborating with project partner superintendents and other office personnel to ensure job site productivity.
• Conducting on-site project orientations and effective pre-construction planning sessions.
• Supervising project partners, Foremen, and crews.
• Mentoring, managing, and conducting timely performance evaluations of Foremen and crew members.
• Conducting interviews as needed.
• Ensuring proper task coding of work hours on timecards.
• Managing and tracking work progress and craft productivity.
• Managing new and current team member training, ensuring they are current prior to starting tasks.
• Conducting career development discussions with Foremen and crews.
• Conducting disciplinary actions as needed.
• Conducting jobsite safety inspections and audits to maintain safety compliance.
• Reporting all employee accidents, injuries, and incidents immediately and ensuring proper documentation is completed.
• Conducting tailgate safety meetings with all crew members and ensuring all related forms and attendance sheets are completed.
• Ensuring injured employees immediately seek appropriate medical attention.
• Ensuring all employees wear appropriate protective safety gear and follow all safety regulations on the job site.
• Maintaining a clean and safe work environment (equipment, bin area, laydown space, supplies, and materials).
• Providing high-level management of safety, quality, risk, and compliance for the project and team members.
• Recognizing and mitigating unfavorable working conditions.
• Identifying opportunities to improve processes and procedures.
• Performing other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• Minimum eight years of pipeline construction experience, with two of those years in a supervisory role.
• Proven ability to fulfill responsibilities for multiple, complex projects.
• Demonstrated flexibility to effectively deal with changing priorities and timelines through analytical problem-solving.
• Proven time management and follow-through skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks with tight deadlines.
• Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team-oriented environment.
• Superior written and oral communication skills, along with effective listening skills.
• Tactful, mature, and professional demeanor with well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse personnel.
• Ability to understand written procedures, write routine documents, speak clearly, and understand multi-step written and oral instructions in English.
• Associate’s or bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil, or Architectural Engineering, or Construction Management (preferred but not required).
• Strong organization, record-keeping, and follow-up skills.
• Valid CA Driver’s License and a good driving record.
• Bilingual preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position is primarily sedentary to light work in nature. The employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods, use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, telephone, and office equipment, and occasionally stand, walk, bend, or reach. The employee may occasionally lift or move office materials such as files, binders, laptops, or boxes of supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

Work is typically performed in a professional office environment, with occasional visits to field or construction sites as required. The noise level in the office is usually moderate. The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, dust, and construction noise when visiting job sites. All work must be performed in compliance with Cal/OSHA safety and ergonomic standards, and employees are expected to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when entering field areas.
