Underground Mechanic
About the Role
Our client, an established precious metals mining company with operations across North America, is seeking an Underground Mobile Mechanic to join their Mobile Maintenance team. Reporting to the Shift Coordinator, Underground Mobile Maintenance, this role involves troubleshooting, repairing, servicing, and maintaining a diverse fleet of underground mobile mining equipment. The successful candidate will work closely with underground production and maintenance teams to maximize equipment availability, ensure safety, and support operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain underground mobile mining equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance, lubrication, inspections, and field repairs
- Work on a diverse fleet including drills, bolters, haul trucks, graders, dozers, tractors, and light vehicles
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, diesel, hydraulic, and related heavy equipment systems
- Complete tire changes on rubber-tired mobile equipment
- Test repaired equipment to ensure safe and effective operation
- Assist with welding, fabrication, and equipment modification tasks
- Identify and communicate equipment issues impacting safety, reliability, or production
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, logs, and documentation
- Manage company and personal tools, equipment, and materials
- Maintain clean and organized work areas
- Collaborate with mechanics, operators, and supervisors
- Participate in safety initiatives, risk assessments, and continuous improvement activities
- Identify and report workplace hazards and unsafe conditions
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational procedures
Requirements
- High school diploma, trade school education, or equivalent experience
- 4+ years of heavy equipment maintenance experience
- Strong troubleshooting and repair skills for heavy mobile equipment
- Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and mechanical systems
- Previous mining experience preferred; underground mining experience a strong asset
- Experience with underground drills, bolters, haul trucks, graders, dozers, or tractors preferred
- Welding and fabrication experience considered an asset
- Ability to read equipment information and determine repair solutions
- Proficiency in maintenance documentation and basic computer data entry
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Reliability, initiative, and commitment to safe work practices
- Willingness to comply with company policies, MSHA requirements, and regulations
- Ability to work in an underground mining environment and around heavy equipment
- Flexibility to work varying schedules, including occasional nights or weekends
Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 100 lbs from floor to waist
- Lift up to 75 lbs from floor to shoulder height
- Lift up to 50 lbs overhead
- Carry up to 100 lbs for short distances
- Perform pushing and pulling activities requiring significant force
- Climb stairs and ladders
- Stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, and squat for extended periods
- Work in confined or restricted areas
- Maintain visual awareness for safe operation around equipment and infrastructure
- Communicate clearly in person and over radio systems
Work Environment
- Underground mining environment with exposure to heavy equipment and production areas
- Varying temperatures, including extreme heat and cold
- Potential exposure to wet/humid conditions, dust, fumes, vibration, and loud noise
- Work around moving mechanical equipment, electrical systems, chemicals, and explosives
- Use of personal protective equipment and hearing protection as required
Pay
Hourly earning potential from $36.04–$44.04/hour depending on technician level, with overtime paid in accordance with Alaska OT rules. Quarterly bonus opportunity of up to 20%, historically averaging approximately 16%.
Schedule
FIFO opportunity with company-paid flights. Work may occasionally require nights, weekends, or outside regular scheduled hours based on operational needs.
