Underground Lineman - (AP)
About the role
The Underground Lineman is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. They lead crews and represent the company in the absence of the foreman, conducting pre-job briefings and possessing comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of underground distribution.
Responsibilities
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work of energized and de-energized underground work.
- Lead crew and represent the Company in absence of the Foreman.
- Effectively conduct pre-job briefings.
- Possess a working knowledge of all aspects of underground distribution.
- Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
- Operate a backhoe.
- Safely operate and maintain company equipment.
- Able to identify primary and secondary voltage.
- Capable of switching & splicing.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Knows how to terminate cable.
- Understands grounding procedures.
- Understands how to obtain a one shot on a recloser.
- Able to work in confined spaces.
- Understands confined space requirements.
- Able to properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
- Understands underground services, infrastructure, and duct banks.
- Knows underground switching procedures.
- Understands how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
- Planner safe work based on a job print or work order.
- Promote safety at all times.
- Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Inspects the work of crew members.
- Performs all other related work as required to complete the job.
Requirements
- 1-3 years of experience.
- Read and communicate effectively in English.
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
- Understands flag and tag procedures.
- Possesses a CDL or able to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
- Demonstrates safe driving techniques.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- Willing to work over-time when requested.
- Able to use hand tools on a continuous basis.
- Able to be exposed to dirt and power on a daily basis.
- Knowledge in identifying underground utility locates.
- Knows how to terminate cable.
- Capable of terminating different sizes of cable.
- Knowledge in troubleshooting underground circuits.
- Able to identify unforeseen obstacles that would hinder safety or production.
- Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
- Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
Physical Demands
- Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
- Exposure to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites.
- Noise levels in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
- This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
