UN Women: English Copy Editor (Retainer), Home based, International Consultant
About the role
UN Women Indonesia Country Office is seeking a professional English copy editor to provide copy editing services on UN Women publications as needed. This is a retainer-based consultancy, engaging the consultant only when required by the UN Women Indonesia Country Office.
The consultant will report to the Advocacy and Communications Analyst and will be supported by the Communications Associate on contract and payment matters.
Responsibilities
- Provide editing, proofreading, and rewriting (as necessary) services for knowledge products and publications.
- Make revisions based on the UN editorial style manual and UN Women Editorial Style Guide.
- Copyedit, proofread, and identify gaps in information; restructure and rewrite in collaboration with UN Women to ensure clarity, consistency, and correctness of UN Women’s standard use of terminologies.
- Correct spelling mistakes, typos, and ensure appropriate usage of words with correct grammar and syntax.
- Ensure consistent style and formatting throughout the document while maintaining the authors’ writing style.
- Ensure coherence and consistency in writing.
- Ensure appropriate positioning and numbering of boxes, figures, and tables.
- Ensure consistent font usage relevant to headings and text.
- Ensure appropriate use of italicized and bolded words.
- Ensure all footnotes, sources, and references are complete and consistent.
- Thoroughly review annexes (e.g., people consulted, bibliography) as per UN publication guidelines.
- Prepare a complete table of contents and acronyms if needed.
- Proofread designed layout files to ensure completeness.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in English Literature, Journalism, or a related field; or a first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience.
- At least 5 years (with a Master’s degree) or 7 years (with a Bachelor’s degree) of professional work experience in editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
- Proven record in editing knowledge products and communications materials for external audiences, including reports, publications, news articles, feature stories, policy briefs, and advocacy notes.
- Experience in writing and editing for international development and/or other UN agency documents is an asset.
- Familiarity with gender equality and women’s empowerment issues is desired.
- Native-level proficiency in oral and written English.
- Computer literacy and ability to work with technical and software-based equipment to deliver services.

Duration and Terms
The consultancy is estimated at a maximum of 100 working days within the specified contract period. The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, with payment made upon satisfactory completion of deliverables or as agreed. The expected number of workdays for each deliverable will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
This is a home-based consultancy with no official travel required.
