About the Role

UMKC is seeking applications for a full-time, tenured/tenure track (or non-tenure-track) faculty member for the position of Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. We seek an innovative leader in ongoing development, assessment and improvement in educational outcomes in dental education. Candidates should have commitment to institutional missions in teaching, research/scholarly activity, service and organizational quality improvement. Candidates should have experience with the accreditation processes and preparation and have demonstrated successful leadership in the American Dental Education Association or discipline specific professional organizations. Experience in curricular design, pedagogical theory, didactic and clinical assessment methodology is essential. Candidates must have education and academic experience commensurate for the rank of Associate or Professor. The position is responsible to the dean of the school of dentistry and represents the dean in his/her absence.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures excellence in all matters related to the academic mission of the School of Dentistry
  • Leads in developing and meeting the goals and objectives of the School's educational mission and strategic plan and facilitates evidence based educational programming and processes
  • Has responsibility for coordination, implementation and successful outcomes related to ongoing compliance with Commission on Dental Accreditation expectations
  • Is responsible for development, implementation and equitable application of academic policies of the school
  • Facilitates process of curriculum development, faculty discussion and implementation and communicates program initiatives and updates with faculty, staff and students
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs to facilitate coordination and calibration of the educational program
  • Supervises the Educational Program Manager to support ongoing faculty development and faculty retreat planning
  • Oversee organization and academic review of curricular offerings through leadership of the Curriculum Committee
  • Is responsible for review of student progress in the DDS and DH programs through leadership of the Academic Standards Committee
  • Oversee the completion of periodic reports of academic programs for internal and external groups on behalf of the school
  • Serves as the School's faculty promotion and tenure coordinator, supporting faculty review processes in alignment with University policies, unit bylaws, timelines, documentation requirements, and applicable Collected Rules and Regulations
  • Oversees assessment, data collection and analysis of program outcomes
  • Oversee the efforts of the Student Services Coordinator in managing student counseling, mentoring and advising
  • Has a global perspective of integration of basic biomedical and clinical sciences addressing the changing national educational environment in dentistry
  • Has a pulse on the future of dental education and is passionate about shaping the educational programs for the future of dental education
  • Participates with dean's leadership team in discussing/triaging important external, university, campus and school initiatives
  • Promotes positive, civil discourse while valuing, promoting and upholding the UMKC School of Dentistry Core Values
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication and maintains confidentiality of information when required

Required Qualifications

  • DDS/DMD or equivalent and/or a master's or doctoral degree in a related healthcare profession, educational discipline, or clinical science
  • Education and academic experience commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Demonstrated record of administrative achievement and at least five years of ongoing leadership roles in a dental institution
  • Evidence of demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, excellent judgment and collaborative management expertise

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with accreditation processes and accreditation preparation
  • Demonstrated successful leadership in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) or other discipline-specific professional organizations

In addition to the above, candidates for a tenure-eligible appointment should possess:

  • Advanced teaching experience and philosophy
  • Provide demonstrated potential for or provide evidence of funded research and scholarly activity
  • Demonstrated service to the profession and/or participation in local, state or national professional organizations
