About the role

Under the general supervision of the radiologists and the Manager Medical Imaging, and following established procedures, performs diagnostic procedures to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury using ultrasound equipment. This role uses the principles of sonography to produce images, giving size and depth of the tissue being studied. Responsibilities

• Complies with hospital and department policies and procedures, including protecting the confidentiality of patient information.
• Operates ultrasound equipment efficiently.
• Maintains aseptic conditions during invasive procedures.
• Reviews available clinical data from charts and hospital systems to alert nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, or licensed practitioners to possible contradictions for procedure.
• Observes and reassures patient prior to and during all procedures.
• Performs ultrasonic scanning procedures and exams, such as abdominal echoes, renals, aorta, thyroid, dopplers (including pelvic, scrotal, breasts), color flow studies, renal biopsies, fluid collections of localized areas, thoracentesis and paracentesis, breast sonography (including localizations, biopsies, and aspirations).
• Reviews and/or records pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.
• Positions and instructs patient regarding the procedure to obtain the desired diagnostic results specified by the physician, physician extender, or licensed practitioner.
• Conducts scanning procedure using ultrasound equipment and records anatomical pathophysiological data.
• Assembles all necessary information and imaging, including own impressions of the case, and presents them to the physician, advanced practice providers, or licensed practitioner for interpretation.
• Assists physician, physician extender, or licensed practitioner in procedures (such as aspirations and biopsies) by confirming the location of the region of interest (ROI) using ultrasound equipment and marking the body as needed.
• Hands instruments and equipment to the physician, physician extender, or licensed practitioner, and scans the patient using ultrasound equipment at designated intervals during the procedure.
• Acquires images and sends imaging and technical notes to PACS.
• Reviews daily procedure and scheduled examinations.
• Orders and stores supplies required for ultrasound procedures.
• Checks expiration dates for all supplies and ultrasound medications; disposes of expired materials using appropriate procedure.
• Provides clinical experience for Ultrasound students, instructing and guiding them through ultrasound procedures and exams.
• Ensures ultrasound and other equipment in the department functions properly to maintain accuracy of test procedures; contacts appropriate service personnel for repairs or adjustments.
• Notifies manager/lead sonographer of equipment issues.
• Maintains and enhances professional expertise through participation in in-service education, professional seminars, and meetings.
• Performs all duties in consideration of optimum department efficiency.
• Performs all essential functions in this position with consideration of the age-specific needs of geriatric and adult patients.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians’ offices, and ancillary healthcare enterprises with direct patient contact.
• Works with medical equipment; subject to electrical and energy hazards (minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions, including use of safety equipment and protective clothing).
• Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day.
• Physical dexterity and strength to operate ultrasound equipment and to lift and move patients into correct position.
• May lift and position patients and lift supplies up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

• ARDMS certification required.
• ARDMS registration required for new graduates within 6 months of graduation from an approved school.
• Analytical skills to determine the best method of obtaining desired diagnostic results.
• Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress, as well as with staff members and physicians.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
• One year of progressive ultrasound experience preferred.

Independent Action

Incumbent functions independently within a broad scope of department policies and practices; generally refers specific problems to supervisor only where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

Pay

Pay Range: $39.56-$65.28 per hour

Schedule

• Work Type: Week 1 – 3 shifts of 12 hours, Week 2 – 2 shifts of 8 hours and 2 shifts of 12 hours.

• Daily Hours: 8 and 12 hours
