U.S. State and Local Tax (SALT) - Associate (Mid-Level) – SAC, SFO
About the role
Greenberg Traurig (GT), a global law firm, seeks a full-time 2nd – 6th year Associate in the U.S. State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice of our Sacramento or San Francisco office. The position offers competitive compensation and an excellent benefits package.
Responsibilities
- Provide tax planning and advice to clients, including major multinational corporations; large privately-owned businesses; financial institutions; exempt organizations; and private individuals, including high net worth individuals.
- Offer tax services such as U.S., cross-border, and state and local tax advice in connection with corporate transactions, business structures, capital markets, fund formation, real estate investment/financing, finance and financial instruments, and dispute resolution and litigation.
- Counsel senior management and business owners on tax issues regarding personal income, estate, gift, and wealth transfer matters.
- Work closely with clients to address complex tax challenges, seek greater efficiency in tax planning, ensure compliance with tax laws, and coordinate tax decisions across jurisdictions.
- Advise clients on transactional planning, tax-advantaged business restructuring, audit defense, representation in state and local administrative proceedings, appeals, and large-scale multi-jurisdictional litigation.
- Partner with the firm's nationally-recognized Government Law and Policy Practice to help clients achieve legislative results.
Requirements
- Solid academic credentials from a top law school.
- Strong writing and advocacy skills.
- Admitted to the California bar.
- Interest in federal and state tax controversies and an LLM in Taxation from a top law school is preferred but not required.
- Property tax experience or prior government experience, from a state or federal agency or court, is preferred.

Pay
The expected pay range for this position is $215,000 - $390,000, with actual pay adjusted based on experience, location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
Schedule
Full-time employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus.
