This position consists of compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations. This position is a hands-on environmental role requiring routine field work, waste management activities, environmental inspections, sampling, and operation of material handling equipment, in addition to environmental recordkeeping and administrative support functions.
Responsibilities
- Ensure personal safety and the safety of team members; wear appropriate PPE, which may include hearing protection, foot, hand, head and eye protection; proactively promote The McWane Way principles.
- Serve as the primary coordinator for hazardous and non-hazardous waste collection, storage, labeling, inspection, and disposal activities.
- Perform routine inspections of waste accumulation areas, container storage locations, outdoor environmental areas, and spill prevention equipment.
- Assist production and maintenance personnel with proper handling, storage, and disposal of waste and environmentally regulated materials.
- Conduct site investigations, prepare inspection reports, and facilitate activities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and procedures.
- Maintain environmental storage areas in a clean, organized, and inspection-ready condition.
- Assist with spill prevention, spill response, and cleanup activities as directed; report environmental incidents, spills, unsafe conditions, and compliance concerns promptly to appropriate supervision and the Environmental Manager.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment, as authorized, to transport waste containers, environmental materials, spill response equipment, and other regulated materials throughout the facility.
- Perform environmental sampling activities, including collection of wastewater, waste, and other environmental samples as required.
- Work may involve exposure to outdoor conditions, dust, mud, water, waste materials, and other industrial environments.
- Collect environmental data and assist with monitoring, sampling, and compliance activities.
- Provide administrative support for environmental compliance programs by organizing and updating records and documentation associated with air, water, waste, and chemical management activities.
- Assist the Environmental Manager in preparing environmental reports, permit-related documentation, and compliance records.
- Identify and communicate potential environmental compliance concerns to supervision and the Environmental Manager.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and chemical inventory records to support environmental aspect identification, environmental compliance evaluations, waste characterization, and environmental information management.
- Enter, maintain, and organize data within environmental management software systems, including Cority, EMS, EDM, and SharePoint.
- Assist with tracking environmental action items, inspections, audit findings, and corrective actions.
- Assist with environmental audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance assessments.
- Assist in maintaining the Environmental Management System.
- Follow all EHS guidelines and applicable procedures; read, follow, and develop the Environmental Work Instructions.
- Report any unsafe conditions or incidents in a timely manner to their supervisor or any member of management.
- Work with plant supervisors to direct hourly employees in completing environmentally related job duties properly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, compliance requirements, and waste management practices.
- Understanding of hazardous and non-hazardous waste handling, storage, labeling, and disposal procedures.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Ability to conduct inspections, audits, and environmental compliance assessments.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Cority (preferred).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health & Safety, Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Experience with EPA, OSHA, RCRA, SPCC, Stormwater, Wastewater, and Air Compliance Programs.
- Experience supporting Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001 programs.
- Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
