Tutor (SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT)
About the role
We're a boutique test-preparation practice working one-on-one with New York families on independent school and college admissions testing. We're small by design; every family is matched to a tutor chosen specifically for them, and we take on only as many students as we can serve well. We're hiring experienced tutors for in-person work across Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The work
You'll work one-on-one with students preparing for the ISEE, SSAT, SAT, or ACT, usually in the family's home or a quiet space nearby. Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. You'll build each student's plan from their diagnostic, adjust it as their scores move, and write brief notes after each session so the family always knows where things stand. Most of our tutors carry 5-15 hours a week with us, concentrated on weekday evenings and weekend days.
Requirements
- At least two years of paid, one-on-one tutoring experience
- Real command of at least one of the ISEE, SSAT, SAT, or ACT
- A bachelor's degree, or current enrollment in good standing
- Genuine availability for in-person sessions in Manhattan and/or Brooklyn, including evenings and weekends
- Two to three references who have seen you teach
- The professionalism to be the person a family trusts with something they care about a great deal
Qualifications
Experience with NYC independent school admissions, with the ISEE specifically, or with students who test with accommodations is a real advantage. We're less interested in where you went to school than in one thing: do you get curious when a student gets something wrong? The tutors who do well here lean in at the error rather than re-explaining the right answer more slowly.
Pay
Tutor rates start at around $140/hour and go up from there depending on experience. You will always know what we are charging the family. This is an independent contractor (1099) role. You set your own availability and you're free to keep other work. We track sessions and pay out weekly, so there's nothing for you to invoice. Travel time between sessions isn't paid separately. It's built into the rate, and we work hard to match tutors with students near them.
Why our tutors stay
- We match carefully, so you're working with students you're genuinely right for
- We handle the administration so you can concentrate on teaching
- We don't ask anyone to take on more students than they can do well by
How to apply
Applications go through the form on our website. The Apply button will take you there. It takes about fifteen minutes and asks for your résumé, your availability, two short written answers, and 2–3 references. Applications missing the written answers or the references won't be reviewed.
