About the Role
Nevada Gold Mines is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer to join our team at the Turquoise Ridge operation. In this role, you will lead environmental programs managing air, land, waste, and reclamation activities while mentoring junior team members and collaborating with operations, engineering, and regulatory agencies. You will guide day-to-day compliance, oversee permitting and reporting, manage environmental risks, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts for safe, sustainable mining.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and train subordinate environmental engineers, defining objectives, evaluating performance, and fostering career growth.
- Actively manage assigned environmental programs (air, land, waste, reclamation/closure), including data collection for accurate and timely reporting to site management and regulatory agencies.
- Oversee inspections of operations to ensure permit compliance, including accompanying regulatory inspectors on periodic site inspections.
- Direct the preparation and completion of environmental reports and technical documents submitted to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
- Complete permit renewal packages and major operational permitting modification packages as assigned.
- Lead or participate in regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with the company’s Environmental Management System (EMS), ISO 14001 requirements, and other policies.
- Supervise and provide technical expertise in identifying site risks and hazards, recommending mitigation actions.
- Collaborate in recommending compliance actions to management in accordance with regulations.
- Ensure timely completion of daily, weekly, and monthly data reconciliation and analytics reports.
- Participate in the development, administration, and maintenance of environmental policies and procedures.
- Manage Sustainability data inputs/outputs and report on associated performance.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental permit conditions and applicable regulations.
- Manage operational permitting activities and assist with data needs for large-scale growth permitting projects.
- Prepare and submit budgets for areas of responsibility, track costs, manage accruals, update forecasts, and complete projects on budget and within planned timeframes.
- Conduct research activities to support role requirements or assist others.
- Resolve complex process and policy-related queries from operations or other stakeholders.
- Provide after-hours on-call response to environmental incidents.
- Lead and/or participate in incident investigations and corrective action completion for environmental incidents.
- Deliver larger project workstreams within defined time and quality parameters, adhering to project management and permitting methodologies.
- Follow HS&E policies and procedures to identify and mitigate environmental risks and risks to wellbeing; instruct the team in safe working methods and address risky behaviors.
- Develop personal capabilities through assessment, development planning, and formal/informal training; maintain external professional accreditation where relevant.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, Geology, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience in environmental compliance, with at least three (3) years in mining and/or processing (open pit and underground), including regulatory agency interactions.
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Basic knowledge of environmental regulations, including Title V and Class II air permitting, RCRA hazardous waste management, and TRI reporting.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 environmental management systems and compliance tracking.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent judgment.
