Truck Driver/Laborer, DPW, Highway/Stormwater & Parks/Cemeteries

40 hours per week, benefited position. Starting pay: $28.89 to $29.61 per hour, depending on qualifications. Collective Bargaining Agreements and the most recent MOA are available on the Human Resources page. CDL required upon hire or must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment. Incumbent must be available for overtime for mandatory emergency and sanding and plowing operations.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy and light-duty trucks with or without dump body, sand spreader, snow plow, trailed equipment, compressor, pavement breaker, jack hammer, pavement saw cutter, leaf vacuum/blower, walk-behind sidewalk sweeper, motorized plate compactor, curbing paver, grass mowers, trimmers, and chain saws.
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance of light motorized equipment; assist mechanic with minor repair work.
• Perform manual tasks including:
  • Repair, clean, and construct catch basins, culverts, manholes, and waterways.
  • Cut, remove, and load roadside vegetation; collect leaves at roadside.
  • Install and repair asphalt pavement.
  • Plow, blow, shovel, and load snow.
  • Install and repair sidewalks, curbs, stone walls, fences, and guard rails.
  • Maintain public works facilities; collect and dispose of rubbish.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by one year of experience in construction labor and operation of light motorized equipment (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
• Valid Massachusetts CDL driver’s license or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hoisting licenses: 2A, 4E, and/or 4G.

Skills

• Working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in public works construction and maintenance.
• Working knowledge of operating light motorized equipment and understanding of traffic and highway safety rules.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 60 pounds (e.g., pneumatic pavement breaker).
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to traverse rough or uneven terrain (e.g., drainage trenches, ditches, culverts).
• Ability to work in close quarters (e.g., catch basins, water service trenches, drainage pipe trenches).
