Truck Driver CDL Class A

About the Role

The Class A CDL Driver is responsible for driving a tractor trailer combination or truck with a capacity of at least 26,000 GVW to transport and deliver equipment and material to supplier, customer, storage, or processing locations. This role ensures compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards and all applicable DOT regulations. Duties may include operating loading and unloading equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, hand lifts, hydraulic lifts, or wheel loaders.

Responsibilities

• Strictly adhere to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
• Move freight and materials to and from production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, ships, and containers by hand or using trucks, tractors, and other equipment.
• Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from the loading crew.
• Secure material for transport using ropes, blocks, chains, or covers.
• Receive instructions from dispatch and proceed to locations for delivery or receipt of material.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
• Maintain logs of working hours, vehicle service, and repair status, adhering to state and federal regulations.
• Obtain receipts or signatures for delivered materials and verify documentation for completeness and accuracy.
• Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.
• Carry needed tools and supplies from storage or trucks and return them after use.
• Report all vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damages to the appropriate supervisor.
• Support the company’s Internal Control process, including compliance with defined internal controls and suggesting improvements.
• Communicate upward any operational problems, policy violations, or illegal actions.

Requirements

• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s license.
• Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate and ability to renew it.
• Twenty-four (24) months verifiable Class A driving experience within the last five (5) years.
• No more than two (2) moving violations in the last three (3) years.
• No more than one (1) preventable accident in the last three (3) years.
• Must be registered in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
• Ability to use or learn automated systems for electronic logs, training, or other business requirements.
• Acceptable PSP Report, with emphasis on out-of-service violations and crashes.

Skills

• Knowledge of automatic routing equipment, wet systems, and relevant policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Ability to operate loading and unloading equipment (e.g., pallet jacks, hand trucks, hydraulic lifts, wheel loaders).
• Strong communication skills for daily face-to-face and radio interactions.
• Physical ability to:
  • Sit constantly and stand/walk frequently on uneven ground.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds consistently.
  • Push, pull, crouch, bend, stoop, reach, twist, and climb occasionally.
  • Handle, grasp, and manipulate controls and equipment constantly.
  • Demonstrate arm-hand steadiness and manual dexterity for precision work.
  • Communicate effectively through speech and hearing.
  • Maintain visual acuity for vehicular navigation.
• Mental dexterity to work independently, demonstrate attention to detail, and maintain continuous awareness.

Job Conditions

• Regular exposure to all weather conditions.
• Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt from equipment, machinery, and scrap materials.
• Required use of safety equipment, including safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields.
• Workload may be unpredictable, with pressure during peak times and critical deadlines.
• Irregular work schedules, including potential extra hours on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
