About the role

The Vermont State Police is seeking certified and full-time law enforcement officers to join our team. This position is open to all state employees and external applicants who meet the eligibility criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with various State Police roles, including patrol commander, special investigator, training instructor, and special unit roles.
  • Exercise high-level initiative, judgment, and discretion within the bounds of regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Occasionally supervise lower-level troopers.
  • Perform duties under the direction of higher-level officers.
  • Attend meetings, court hearings, and seminars as required.
  • Wear a uniform and carry firearms during duty shifts.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles.
  • Respond to emergency needs and Department priorities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Satisfactory completion of the one-year probationary period as a Trooper Probationary.
  • Successful completion of a full-time law enforcement training academy approved by a Peace Officer Standards and Training/Criminal Justice Training council or similar entity.
  • Full-time certification as a law enforcement officer.
  • Three (3) or more years of uninterrupted law enforcement experience and current, full-time employment with a law enforcement agency.
  • A valid Vermont motor vehicle license.
  • Pass a color vision test if having undergone laser eye corrective surgery.
  • Pass physical fitness testing.
  • No felony convictions.

Qualifications

  • Age - Minimum 20 years old to apply and begin the testing selection process. Mandatory retirement at age 55.
  • Vision - Satisfactory depth perception, no marked muscle imbalance, and a satisfactory visual field. Uncorrected vision not worse than 20/200 (Snellen), corrected 20/20 in one eye and not worse than 20/40 in the other eye. Contact lens wearers must have 20/20 corrected vision and have worn contact lenses successfully for a minimum of one year.
  • Hearing - Normal.
  • Health - Mental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform with reasonable accommodation, the essential job functions for this position.
  • Selective Service System - Compliance with all applicable Selective Service requirements.
  • Military - Not required. However, an honorable discharge or separation must have been obtained if military service has been performed.
  • Residency - Applicants must bear the expense of travel to Vermont for multiple stages in the hiring process. Vermont residency is required upon graduation from the academy. Must provide birth certificate, Social Security card, or other documentation of authorization to work in the United States.
  • Driver's License - Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid motor vehicle license at the time of application. Right to operate must not have been suspended or revoked within twelve months of application. Must obtain a Vermont operator's license upon graduation from the Academy.
  • Physical Requirements - Must pass physical fitness testing to proceed with the hiring process. Minimum fitness standards are published on the Vermont State Police website.

Schedule

Duties are largely performed in the field, usually in a motor vehicle during an assigned shift of duty under all types of climatic conditions. Evening, night, weekend, and other irregular duty hours may be required. Significant overtime work may be necessary. Emergency needs and Department priorities may result in interruption and/or cancellation of scheduled days off.
