Key Responsibilities
- Functions with autonomy in clinical nursing practice within the guidelines established by the Iowa Board of Nursing and Iowa Ortho.
- Recognizes potentially dangerous symptoms (reactions, urgent care, pre-stroke diagnosis, cardiac concerns - over the phone) outside of orthopedic care that require immediate referral to the physician.
- At the direction of the physician, provides patient notification and education regarding results of various tests and documents actions in the electronic medical record. Recognizes potentially dangerous symptoms of patients.
- Works collaboratively with physicians and other members of the healthcare team to process information in an accurate, timely and consistent manner.
- Receives and processes medication refill requests through various communication forms. Follows established policies and protocols, handles requests in an accurate, timely and thorough manner. Exercises good judgment in the identification of potential problems such as medication side effects, adverse interactions, non-compliance with the medical plan of care and repeated failure to keep scheduled appointments. Completes order forms/correspondence as needed.
- Responsible for handling a high volume of calls requiring good judgment and decision-making skills. This includes calls to and from physicians, patients, patient’s family members, pharmacies, and various other health related agents. Functions as a one stop resource nurse to provide additional coverage to central scheduling by answering roll over calls.
- Demonstrates clear and effective communication skills. Provides and reinforces education needed for patient efficacy in managing medication and/or test result information. Makes sound judgment in educating patients under physician direction.
- Accurately documents communication and information or forwards calls and/or messages to appropriate person(s). Completes all documentation and medical records accurately and concisely.
- Attends meetings and in-service programs as appropriate.
- Maintains RN License with additional two years of nursing and customer service experience
- Current CPR certification
- Mandatory reporter certification
- BLS certification
- Two years of orthopedic experience preferred
- Two years of previous experience in health care setting

- Demonstrates basic computer skills and accurate data entry; ability to develop skills on the NextGen system by documentation which provides superior customer service and performs as an effective team member.
- Ability to apply nursing and administrative to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
