Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead
About the role
The Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead will report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead, contributing to the Trenchless Program by applying geologic information to engineering and design practices, leading geotechnical exploration campaigns, evaluating subsurface conditions, determining solutions for problematic geologic conditions, and integrating geotechnical data into project deliverables.
- Lead and generate geotechnical data reports and engineering reports.
- Support geotechnical data management using OpenGround and/or gINT software.
- Perform data management and quality control of geological data.
- Assess subsurface conditions and lead efforts for incorporating relevant geological and geotechnical data into critical design and construction decisions.
- Monitor and report on daily construction activities, interface with construction contractors, and communicate with clients and team members off-site.
- Travel as necessary, including longer term travel, to perform field work.
- Manage workload and delegate responsibilities to other geologists or geotechnical professionals.
- Lead and manage a team of geotechnical-focused individuals, providing mentorship and performance reviews.
- Plan, resource forecast, cost estimate, schedule, and manage risk for all geological and geotechnical initiatives.
Responsibilities
Focus on leading and executing comprehensive geotechnical investigations for various trenchless projects. This includes:
- Completing field work to direct and oversee subcontracted geotechnical drilling crews for the exploratory campaign.
- Performing field soil and rock logging and testing.
- Collecting geotechnical data.
- Coordinating laboratory programs.
- Analyzing data and generating reports.
- Generating deliverables using OpenGround and gINT software.
- Creating geological cross sections for HFIAs.
- Assisting in generating design reports.
- Advancing capabilities in software programs like gINT, OpenGround, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Serving as a local resource to HDR’s Area of Operations.
- Supporting other business groups within the broader HDR organization.
- Providing support for Trenchless engineering, design, and field services efforts across all regions and business groups.
Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the OpenGround software.
- Proven history of working and communicating successfully in remote work environments.
- Experience leading and managing direct reports.
- Experience managing subconsultants.
Required Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience.
- Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role.
- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Good leadership and organizational skills.
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
- Knowledge and understanding of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and subsurface material classification(s) based on various testing methods.
Qualifications
- Four-year degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or other related field required.
- Team-oriented with strong desire to lead and drive geotechnical initiatives.
- Open to travel and extensive hours at times.
- Outdoor work in remote field locations.
- Strong writing skills.
- Travel is required.
- PE and/or PG credentials preferred.

- Targeted salary range for this position (based on experience and location) is $120,182 - $172,810.
