Tree Trimmer (PROVISIONAL) (SY 26-27)

About the role

This job posting is for a Provisional position and will create a new list. The hiring department will conduct a preliminary review of your application to determine who to interview. Responsibilities

• Prunes trees, shrubbery, and perennials using hand tools and power equipment to insure proper growth and appearance, to correct damage and overgrowth, and to prevent security problems;
• Removes trees and limbs damaged by disease and weather as needed for safety and appearance;
• Performs tree and limb felling when there is probability of property damage or tree/limb is considered dangerous;
• Operates an aerial lift or climbs trees using ropes and saddle to reach limbs to prune or remove;
• Operates machinery such as chipper, log loader, and stump grinder;
• Maintains machinery and vehicles in proper operating condition by checking fluid levels, greasing parts, and sharpening or replacing chainsaw and chipper blades;
• Performs safety inspections on ropes, saddles, chain saws, and other equipment;
• Cleans worksite of debris upon job completion using rakes, brooms, and shovels;
• Drives trucks to and from worksite;
• Drives commercial motor vehicles, which require a commercial driver's license;
• Responds to emergency storm calls on a twenty-four hour basis;
• Plants and maintains trees on property;
• Follows prescribed safety rules at all times:

Requirements

• One (1) year of experience pruning and/or removing trees using a rope and saddle for climbing.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes by completion of the probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• General knowledge of the methods and equipment used in pruning and removing trees;
• General knowledge of the kinds and characteristics of trees commonly planted on Columbus City Schools property;
• General knowledge of safety practices used in this field;
• General knowledge of the use of knots and ropes in tree trimming and removal;
• Some knowledge of tree trimming equipment and vehicle maintenance;
• Ability to climb trees which may reach fifty (50) to one hundred (100) feet in height;
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: One (1) year of experience pruning and/or removing trees using a rope and saddle for climbing. Substitution(s): A certificate of completion of an approved tree climbing course from an institute recognized by the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) or the International Society of Arboriculture may substitute for the year of experience. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes by completion of the probationary period.
