Treatment Court Recovery Peer Specialist

About the role

The Treatment Court Recovery Peer Specialist provides intensive recovery-focused case management, peer support, care coordination, and systems navigation services for participants enrolled in the Burke-Caldwell District 36 Treatment Court Program.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized recovery-focused case management for Treatment Court participants.
• Complete participant needs assessments and assist in developing individualized recovery plans.
• Carefully monitor participant progress toward recovery goals and assist in identifying and addressing barriers to success.
• Maintain regular contact with participants through various communication methods.
• Assist participants with appointment scheduling, treatment engagement, transportation coordination, and service navigation.
• Support participants during transitions including treatment admission, hospitalization, incarceration, housing changes, and program advancement.
• Utilize lived experience to establish rapport, inspire hope, and promote recovery.
• Provide recovery coaching and peer mentoring throughout all phases of Treatment Court participation.
• Aid participants in developing recovery capital, self-advocacy skills, resilience, and independent living skills.
• Promote harm reduction principles and overdose prevention education as appropriate.
• Document participant progress, barriers, referrals, and recovery activities.
• Support participant compliance through engagement, education, encouragement, and recovery planning rather than enforcement.
• Develop collaborative relationships with treatment providers, healthcare organizations, recovery community organizations, employers, housing providers, educational institutions, and social service agencies.
• Maintain current knowledge of community resources and available recovery supports.
• Facilitate referrals and coordinated service delivery among partner agencies.
• Participate in community outreach events, recovery celebrations, naloxone trainings, educational programs, and public awareness activities.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in accordance with County policy, Treatment Court requirements, grant requirements, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) certification.
• Demonstrated lived experience with substance use recovery, behavioral health recovery, or other qualifying lived experience consistent with North Carolina Peer Support standards.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience providing peer support, recovery coaching, case management, behavioral health services, or community-based human services.
• Valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field (preferred).
• Experience working with justice-involved populations.
• Experience working in Treatment Court, Recovery Court, behavioral health, substance use treatment, or community corrections.
• Experience providing intensive case management or care coordination.
• Community Health Worker certification.
• Motivational Interviewing training.
• Trauma-informed care training.

Qualifications

• Maintain current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist certification throughout employment.
• Successfully complete all required Treatment Court training.
• Maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Ability to travel throughout Burke and Caldwell Counties.
• Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and special events.
• Ability to meet County employment requirements, including criminal background investigation and drug screening.
• Knowledge of Recovery-oriented systems of care.
• Substance use disorders and evidence-based treatment approaches.

Pay

$18.87 - $22.18 per hour commensurate with experience.
