About the Role
Summit Underground Solutions, a United Utility Services Company, is seeking an experienced and proactive Traveling Safety Representative to oversee and uphold safety compliance on HDD, open-cut pipeline, and underground utility construction projects across the United States. This role provides field safety leadership, partnering with operations to proactively identify hazards, coach employees, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote a strong culture of safety.
Responsibilities
- Monitor daily HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) and open cut pipeline activities for safety compliance
- Conduct site safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments
- Ensure OSHA and company safety standards are met across all crews and subcontractors
- Educate, train, and coach teammates on health and safety issues
- Work closely with leadership to maintain safety integration with operations
- Lead daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and pre-task planning sessions
- Lead incident investigations in collaboration with operations to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and ensure timely reporting
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safe work practices
- Perform inspections of company vehicles and equipment to verify required safety equipment is present, operational, and properly maintained
- Coordinate emergency response procedures and drills
- Maintain accurate safety documentation and records
- Oversee safety performance during high-risk activities and provide field leadership during critical operations
- Identify and mitigate hazardous working conditions through collaboration with field supervision
- Clarify safety rules and provide technical expertise and solutions to safety challenges on-site
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all on-site safety concerns
Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years of safety experience in pipeline construction, HDD, or open cut operations
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and PHMSA pipeline safety standards
- Demonstrated knowledge of trenching and trench shoring systems and safety practices
- Experience conducting trenching, excavation, and confined space incident investigations
- OSHA 500 or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Current, valid driver's license in your state of residence
- Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including standing or walking for long periods, occasionally on uneven terrain, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting heavy loads of up to 50 pounds
- Willingness to travel extensively throughout the United States, including overnight travel and extended assignments lasting several weeks
Qualifications
- Preferred certifications: OSHA 30 Construction, First Aid/CPR Instructor, HAZWOPER, CHST, ASP, or CSP
- CSP, ASP, or CHST (nice-to-have)
- Degree in Occupational Health and Safety (nice-to-have)
- Bilingual-Spanish (nice-to-have)
