About the Role

A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), also known as a Speech Therapist, is a licensed healthcare professional who evaluates, diagnoses, and treats individuals with speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. SLPs work with patients of all ages to help improve their ability to communicate effectively, swallow safely, and manage cognitive-communication disorders.

Responsibilities

• Assessment and Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive evaluations to assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders. Use standardized assessments, case history review, and observational techniques to identify deficits. Diagnose disorders such as speech delays, stuttering, voice disorders, aphasia, dysphagia, and cognitive communication issues.
• Developing Treatment Plans: Create individualized treatment plans based on patient assessment findings and goals. Set short-term and long-term goals to improve speech, language, and swallowing abilities. Modify plans based on patient progress.
• Speech and Language Therapy: Provide therapy for speech articulation, language comprehension, and expression. Treat voice disorders, fluency disorders (e.g., stuttering), and aphasia caused by neurological conditions. Offer therapy for cognitive-communication disorders, including memory, attention, and executive function problems.
• Swallowing Therapy (Dysphagia Treatment): Evaluate and treat patients with swallowing difficulties. Conduct assessments to determine the cause and severity of dysphagia. Implement therapy techniques, recommend dietary changes, and collaborate with dietitians to improve outcomes.
• Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and families about speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Provide strategies and exercises for continued progress at home. Offer emotional support and coping strategies.
• Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate patient records, documenting assessments, treatment plans, and progress. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA) and provide reports for insurance purposes.
• Collaborative Care: Work as part of a multidisciplinary team with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals. Participate in care team meetings to discuss patient progress and adjust treatment plans.
• Supervision and Mentorship: Supervise and mentor clinical fellows, speech-language pathology assistants, or student interns. Provide guidance and feedback to help develop their clinical skills.
• Professional Development: Stay current with research and advancements in speech-language pathology through continuing education. Maintain licensure and certifications, such as the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP). Engage with professional organizations like ASHA.

Pay

Pay package is based on 12-hour shifts and 36 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with a tax-free stipend amount to be determined.
