Location: Overland Park, KS (10500 Quivira Road)
About the Unit
- 26-bed Post Partum unit
- Patient ratios: 6-8 patients per RN
- Staffing: RNs only; unit secretaries not available; PCTs rarely used, only during short staffing
- Equipment: vitals machines, glucometers, computers, TCB (thermal comfort blankets), post-partum supplies
- Documentation system: CPN, Meditech
- Scheduling: varies; typically includes 2 hard-to-staff shifts (Monday/Friday) and 1 full weekend every 3rd week plus 1 additional weekend shift
- No on-call requirements
- Floating: within women’s services unless cross-trained to pediatrics and/or NICU
- Patient experience: post-partum care, LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum), well-baby nursery, recoveries, attending births for baby
Responsibilities
- Recognize unit workflow, processes, policies, and procedures within the post-partum unit
- Assess and identify risk factors related to sepsis, venous thromboembolism/deep vein thrombosis (VTE/DVT), suicide, malignant hyperthermia, and pressure injury
- Provide discharge education and assessment
- Perform abnormal assessments and pain management
- Prioritize patient care needs based on acuity
- Use AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) and BSSR (Bedside Shift Report) communication frameworks
- Perform circumcisions
Requirements
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
- Ability to work night shifts (07:00 PM – 07:00 AM)
