Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist provides quality patient care by delivering intensive respiratory therapy and facilitating patient transport into and out of the facility as medically prescribed, within the scope of professional licensure and with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates patients and recommends treatment plans
  • Explains the purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment, and provides necessary education upon discharge
  • Performs physician-prescribed respiratory treatments, including use of invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment, oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizer devices to administer prescribed medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation
  • Performs chest physiotherapy to promote secretion clearance and performs suctioning using oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal methods
  • Performs oximetry and capnography monitoring per policy; performs routine review of chest x-rays to determine the need for further evaluation
  • Performs 12-Lead EKG and basic arrhythmia recognition; performs pulmonary function studies per policy (e.g., NIF, VC)
  • Assists with respiratory care procedures per policy (e.g., bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, chest tube placement)
  • Performs drainage via PleurX catheter or similar device where applicable; performs tracheostomy care per policy, including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes (emergent and non-emergent)
  • Performs arterial puncture per policy and monitors, records, and reports test results related to efficiency of ventilation
  • Follows policies and procedures related to laboratory testing for facilities with moderate complexity labs, including specimen handling, equipment use, documentation and reporting, quality controls, and maintenance across pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation per Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) guidelines
  • Performs insertion and removal of endotracheal tubes via freehand technique and/or video laryngoscope system
  • Conducts setup and self-test on ventilatory equipment as required and operates, maintains, and monitors mechanical ventilation on various equipment types
  • Assists with preventative maintenance and repair of equipment as needed
  • Documents pertinent information on treatments and patient response in respiratory care records and the patient chart; provides shift-to-shift handoff communication during walking rounds
  • Maintains accurate respiratory therapy charging, including data entry, verification, and correction of errors

Qualifications

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (Respiratory Therapist Registered)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Pay & Schedule

The pay package is based on 12 hour shifts and 36 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with a tax-free stipend amount to be determined.
