Unit Overview

Specialty: Medical-Surgical Oncology
Beds: 48
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Days: 1:5–7, Nights: 1:6–8
Required Certifications: BLS, Active RN License
Common Patient Population: Oncology patients, Pneumonia, UTIs, Altered Mental Status (AMS), Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleeds, Alcohol Withdrawal, Falls, Generalized Weakness
Experience Requirements: Minimum 1 year of Med-Surg experience, Oncology experience preferred if available
First-time travelers accepted
Drip Management: RN Titrate Drips (Yes)

  • Heparin

Responsibilities

  • Vital signs
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • EKGs
  • Apply telemetry monitors
  • Bathing
  • Feeding
  • Toileting
  • Turning and repositioning patients
  • Respiratory Support
  • Respiratory Therapy manages: BiPAP, CPAP, High-flow oxygen, Breathing treatments, Inhalers, ABGs
  • RNs primarily monitor patients while RT manages respiratory equipment
  • Telemetry Central Monitor Technician located on Level 5 monitors telemetry
  • Monitor Techs notify nursing staff of rhythm changes
  • RNs are not required to independently interpret telemetry strips
  • Scheduling: Shift Hours RN: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 PM, PCT: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM / 6:00 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Scheduling Notes: No self-scheduling, No block scheduling, Manager creates the schedule, Requested Time Off (RTO) accommodated when possible
  • Travelers should remain flexible to help fill staffing gaps
  • Rotating staff generally work: Two weeks of days, Two weeks of nights, No mixed day/night weeks, Every other weekend
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Travelers may participate in the RN holiday rotation
  • Call Requirement: None
  • Floating: May float to: Medical-Surgical units, Med-Surg/Telemetry units, Intermediate Care (IMC) for lower-acuity patients
  • Dress Code: RN: Navy Blue, PCT: Ceil Blue, Unit Secretaries: Black/Pink
