About the role

TotalMed is seeking an Operating Room RN for a travel nursing opportunity in Reston, VA. The ideal candidate should have 1-2 years recent acute care experience as a circulating nurse, scrub nurse, or potentially RN first assistant. OR Travel Nurses assist physicians and medical staff in caring for surgical patients, provide pre- and post-surgery care and education, and work within the operating suite. Circulating OR Nurses work outside the sterile field, while Scrub OR Nurses handle instruments and equipment within the sterile field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic bedside care
  • Prepare, administer and record prescribed medication, reporting any adverse reactions to treatment
  • Serve as the communication liaison between patients' family members and members of the operating team
  • Ensure that the correct procedure is being performed on the correct patient
  • Initiate patient education plan as prescribed by physician; teach patients and families how to manage medication and home care needs
  • Prepare instruments for specific surgical procedures
  • Monitor and observe the patient during surgery
  • Respond to potential complications alongside the physician

Additional duties by role

Circulating OR Nurses:

  • Respond to comfort and safety needs of patient
  • Accurate care and handling of specimens
  • Monitor equipment used during surgery
  • Inventory of surgical items pre- and post-procedure

Scrub OR Nurses:

  • Selection and handling of surgical instruments and supplies during procedures
  • Inventory of surgical items pre- and post-procedure

RN First Assistant:

  • Assist physicians by delivering direct surgical care
  • Help control bleeding
  • Suture patients following surgery

Requirements

  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification
  • 1 year of recent acute care experience as a circulating nurse, scrub nurse, or RN first assistant
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, as well as bend, lean and stoop without difficulty
  • Ability to easily lift 20 pounds; moving or lifting patients may require lifting up to 50 pounds at times
  • Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to certain chemicals or infectious diseases
  • Additional certifications may be required before beginning an assignment
