About the role

TotalMed is seeking an Operating Room RN for a travel nursing opening in San Antonio, TX. The right candidate should have 1–2 years recent acute care experience as a circulating nurse, scrub nurse, or potentially RN first assistant.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians and medical staff in caring for surgical patients.
  • Provide pre- and post-surgery care and education to patients.
  • Provide basic bedside care.
  • Prepare, administer, and record prescribed medication, reporting any adverse reactions to treatment.
  • Serve as the communication liaison between patients' family members and members of the operating team.
  • Ensure that the correct procedure is being performed on the correct patient.
  • Initiate patient education plan as prescribed by physician; teach patients and families how to manage medication and home care needs.

Circulating OR Nurse additional duties

  • Respond to comfort and safety needs of patient.
  • Accurate care and handling of specimens.
  • Monitor equipment used during surgery.
  • Inventory of surgical items pre- and post-procedure.

Scrub OR Nurse additional duties

  • Selection and handling of surgical instruments and supplies during procedures.
  • Inventory of surgical items pre- and post-procedure.

RN First Assistant additional duties

  • Assist physicians by delivering direct surgical care.
  • Help control bleeding.
  • Suture patients following surgery.

Requirements

  • ACLS certification.
  • BLS certification.
  • 1 year of recent acute care experience as an OR nurse.
  • Additional certifications may be required before beginning an assignment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods, as well as bend, lean, and stoop without difficulty.
  • Ability to easily lift 20 pounds; moving or lifting patients may require lifting up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to certain chemicals or infectious diseases.

Schedule

12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week, for a 13-week duration.
