Staffing Ratios

  • Days: 1:7 (typically)
  • Nights: 1:7 (typically)
  • Ratio ranges from 1:6–7

Charge Nurse

  • Carries a full patient assignment
  • Supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA) (40 hours/week)
  • Half the time providing patient care
  • Half the time performing administrative duties

CNA Staffing

  • Typically 4–6 CNAs per shift
  • CNA ratio: 1:10–12

Scheduling

  • Shift Times: 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM (Days), 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM (Nights)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (3 weekends within a 6-week schedule)
  • Holidays Included in the holiday rotation

Common Drips

  • Heparin
  • PCA with Morphine (MSO4)
  • Rare Lasix infusion (not continuous)

Provider Coverage

  • Hospitalist: 24/7 in-house
  • Intensivist (ICU): 24/7 in-house
  • Residents: 24/7 in-house

Support Services

  • IV Team available 24/7
  • Dedicated PICC team available
  • RNs assess IV sites but do not start peripheral IVs
  • All IV starts are completed by the IV Team
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • Pharmacy available 24/7
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system
  • Floating to other MedSurg units, MedSurg/Oncology, or IMC (Medical-Surgical overflow only)

Orientation

  • General hospital orientation
  • Two full shifts on the unit

Common Patient Population

  • Post-operative patients: Orthopedic surgeries, basic neurosurgery (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), cholecystectomy, mastectomy, sleeve gastrectomy
  • Medical diagnoses: COPD, chest pain, pneumonia, cellulitis, various infections
  • Additional notes: Patients being tested for COVID-19 generally remain on the unit while awaiting results. If testing is expected to take an extended period, the patient will be transferred to the designated COVID unit.

Additional Notes

  • Dress Code: RNs: Navy blue scrub top, navy blue scrub pants, navy scrub jacket (no hoodies); CNAs: Gray scrubs
