About the role

TotalMed is seeking a travel nurse RN for the Emergency Department in Puyallup, Washington. This is a 14-week travel nursing assignment with 36 hours per week on 12-hour shifts, days and evenings with flexible scheduling.

Unit details

  • Unit: Emergency Department
  • Start date: October 11, 2026
  • Duration: 14 weeks
  • Schedule: 36 hours/week, 12-hour shifts (days/mids: 0700, 1100; mids/nights: 1500, 1900)
  • Floating: None
  • Scrub color: Any professional colors; piercings modest/studs only; tattoos not offensive
  • Parking: Free in designated areas

Required certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • TNCC
  • NIHSS
  • CPI/MOAB

Experience required

  • 2 years of ED experience
  • Level III trauma or higher experience required
  • EPIC experience required (no exceptions)
  • Previous travel experience preferred

Patient population

  • Patient types from pediatrics to geriatrics
  • Trauma, GSW, sepsis, COVID, STEMI (large amount), stroke, DKA, mental health, respiratory issues, geriatric, adult psych, stroke (TNK), high acuity medical
  • High geriatric population (falls, STEMI)
  • Does not do invasive neuro (no craniotomies)
  • Small amount of pediatrics (generally transferred to Mary Bridge)

Patient ratios

  • Day: 1:4-5 (ability to flex to 5 based on acuity and staffing)

Skills required

  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV skills
  • Basic ED knowledge of drips and medication administration
  • Procedural sedation
  • Blood administration
  • TNK administration (preferred)
  • Cardiac medications

Support on the unit

  • ER tech – glucose checks, iStat, assisting with splinting
  • Charge nurse (rarely takes assignment)
  • Resource/float nurse
  • RT – 24/7
  • ED Educator
  • Security increased for safety 24/7, assigned to ED
  • House Supervisor 24/7
  • Social Work Services assigned to ED 24/7
  • Pharmacy 24/7 – pushes sedation medications and assists in codes

Charting system and equipment

  • EPIC – recent experience required
  • Alaris
  • Pyxis
  • Central and bedside telemetry monitoring at the nursing station (no tele tech)

Orientation

  • Day 1: NEO (badge, EPIC training if needed), meet with educator, hours in mental health area, hours out front
  • Day 2: 12-hour shift with preceptor (on assigned shift)

Telemetry competency

Traveler telemetry competency is required and must be completed and passed prior to start. SimpliFi Compliance is responsible for grading this exam.

Scheduling

  • Will likely work a week at a time on a certain shift, subject to change
  • Scheduler sensitive to scheduling needs
  • Weekends vary depending on unit needs
  • Schedule provided 3 weeks at a time, received around 10 days prior to schedule beginning
  • Manager can approve time off
  • No on-call
  • Holiday expectations: 2 of 5 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, NYE, New Years Day)
