Patient Population

Focuses on treating severe infections (Endocarditis, abscesses, septic arthritis, sepsis, osteomyelitis, diabetic foot infections).

Note: A significant portion of this patient population has underlying substance use histories.

Ratios

• 1:5 to 1:6

Clinical Requirements & Skills

• Strong overall Neuro experience is required.
• (Note: This unit does not require Stepdown RN experience).
• BLS Required.
• Titrations: RNs do not titrate drips unless specifically outlined by physician's orders in a step-down setting (the facility provides protocol education).
• Telemetry: Portable telemetry packs are used. There are no dedicated cardiac monitor techs, and nurses are not required to read or interpret strips.

Support & Orientation

• Support Staff: Clinical Aides (CAs) assist with vital signs, fingersticks, and ADLs (Aide ratios range from 1:7 to 1:22).
• Charge Nurse: Present on the unit (may occasionally take a reduced load of 2–4 patients).
• Orientation: 1–2 shifts on the unit with a preceptor. Standard orientation documentation and POCT validations are provided.

• How comfortable are you working in a setting where patients may be actively using or withdrawing from substances?
• How do you typically manage challenging or escalating situations?
