Population (types of patients): Will see patients with a variety of diagnoses, but a focus on neuroscience patients: Traumatic Brain Injuries (Severe Concussions, Brain Bleeds) – Stroke Patients (Symptoms or Recovery) – Neuro Surgery, post op craniotomies, spine surgery, headache patients. Some fall risk patients. Have to be quick on your feet. Not a lot of down time. May have underlining conditions, dementia, confusion, behavioral health and mental health concerns.
Spectrum Health is the largest health system on the West side of Michigan and is deemed a safety hospital for this community. As a safety hospital, we have a responsibility to the State of Michigan due to our size and level of care we can provide, being the only Trauma level 1 in this area. While the census continues to grow, we are not able to turn away patients for care despite our staff being stretched. New units have been opened to care for the overflow of patients, and both internal and interim staff may be expected to support in our most urgent units as needed.
Responsibilities
- Delivers nursing care responsibly and accountably as described professionally by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and legally by the State of Michigan.
- Demonstrates competency through the critical thinking model known as the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Upholds the standards of professional performance as described by the ANA, including ethical practice, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health.
- Strives to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Supports both Med Surg units as well as progressive care units.
- May need to travel to other units or campuses as needed.
