About the Role
Travel RN position in Med Surg / Telemetry at a 21-bed Medical-Surgical unit in Denison, Iowa. This is a 13-week contract with a start date of 09/07/2026, offering 36 hours per week on night shifts (7:00 PM–7:00 AM).
Responsibilities
- Provide care for patients with respiratory conditions, pneumonia, post-op orthopedic (hip/knee), wound care, cardiac/telemetry, occasional pediatrics, urology, and skilled-care needs.
- Set up and use BiPAP equipment.
- Recognize basic cardiac rhythms and monitor telemetry strips.
- Administer medications, including Cardizem, insulin, and heparin drips.
- Work in a 1:5 patient ratio (occasionally 1:6) with approximately 3 nurses per shift.
- Participate in self-scheduling and block scheduling as needed.
- Float to other units as required (Med-Surg/Telemetry RNs do not float to OB; OB nurses may float to Med-Surg/Telemetry).
Requirements
- 2 years of specialty experience in Med-Surg/Telemetry.
- Experience with telemetry monitoring and reading strips.
- Ability to work with Mindray telemetry monitors.
- Critical Access Hospital experience highly preferred.
- Cerner experience preferred; training may be provided for the right candidate.
- Minimum 50-mile distance requirement (no local clinicians).
Qualifications
- AHA BLS (required).
- AHA ACLS (required).
- AHA PALS (required).
Unit Details
- 21-bed Medical-Surgical unit with an average census of 8–10 patients.
- Typical patient population includes respiratory conditions, post-op orthopedic, wound care, cardiac/telemetry, occasional pediatrics, urology, and skilled-care patients.
- 2 shifts of unit orientation/precepting typically provided.
- Schedules are prepared ~2 weeks in advance, with ~6 weeks scheduled at a time.
