About the role

This position evaluates and implements physical therapy for patients with neurological, burn/wound, or musculoskeletal injuries, or for patients with other acute or chronic physical disabilities through the use of physical therapy techniques to relieve pain, restore function, and facilitate independence.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and assess the patient’s abilities and limitations.
• Establish plan of treatment and goals based on the referral and evaluation of functional skills; joint mobility; gait; developmental reflexes; muscle strength, tone, and coordination; sensation tests; and other measures to ensure rapid patient recovery.
• Implement therapy according to the established plan, utilizing appropriate procedures, equipment, and techniques within the scope of physical therapy.
• Educate the patient and/or the caregiver about the findings of the evaluation, established goals of the physical therapy program, plan of treatment, home programs, injury prevention, and other related information.
• Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of physical therapy modalities.
• Recommend adaptive equipment, complete the equipment justification forms, and arrange for the delivery of equipment.
• Re-evaluate patients, assess their progress, and make recommendations regarding discharge.
• Consult and co-treat with other patient care team members to discuss patient progress, set objectives for patient treatment, and integrate physical therapy treatment with other activities.
• Evaluate home or work environments and make physical barrier modification or ergonomic recommendations.
• May assist with departmental program development and training physical therapy students.
• May provide in-services for PT staff, other employees, and the community.
• Provide documentation of patient care according to established criteria.
• Supervise the patient care activities of aides, assistants, attendants, students, and volunteers.
• Participate in hospital and departmental in-services, medical conferences, staff meetings, continuing education courses, team meetings, and other related activities.
• Assist with departmental operation and ordering supplies.
• Adjust evaluation and treatment for all age groups of patients with appropriate knowledge.
• Communicate with physicians.
• Safely operate equipment used in the course of physical therapy job duties.
• Treat patients with respect and dignity.
• Identify and address the psychosocial needs of patients and families.
• Ensure that patient charges are accurate and entered on a timely basis.
• Participate in and demonstrate good infection control, safety, and ergonomics.
• Recommend process improvements for increased efficiencies.
• Display and promote company values.

Requirements

• Licensed to practice physical therapy in the State of Iowa.
• Graduate of an APTA accredited college or university with a certificate, master’s degree, or doctorate in physical therapy.
• Current BCLS certification.
• Basic knowledge of computer skills.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with strong written and verbal skills.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations professionally.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, and regulatory environment.

Physical Requirements

• Sit an average of 1 hour per workday.
• Stand an average of 7-8 hours per workday.
• Walk an average of 6-7 hours per workday.
• Bend/Stoop frequently (20-30 times/day).
• Squat several times (20-30 times/day).
• Reach above shoulder level frequently (20-30 times/day).
• Lift up to 50 lbs of weight as needed, on demand.
• Lift heavy and awkward weight up to 100+ lbs as needed, on demand.
• Hands used for repetitive fine dexterity actions (e.g., typing, writing, filing) constantly (greater than 25 times/hour).

Pay

Pay package is based on 8-hour shifts and 40 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with a tax-free stipend amount to be determined.
