About the Role

A CT Technologist (CT Tech) operates computed tomography (CT) scanners to perform diagnostic imaging procedures for patients. The CT Tech ensures patient comfort and safety, prepares the imaging equipment, and assists the healthcare team in obtaining diagnostic information.

Responsibilities

• Patient Preparation and Communication:
  • Prepare patients for CT scans by explaining the procedure, answering questions, and ensuring comfort.
  • Verify patient information, including medical history, allergies, and prior imaging.
  • Position patients properly on the CT table to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Instruct patients on breath-holding or remaining still during scans.
• Operation of CT Equipment:
  • Operate and calibrate the CT scanner, adjusting settings such as radiation dose, slice thickness, and imaging protocols.
  • Administer contrast agents or dye injections (under physician or radiologist guidance).
  • Monitor equipment during imaging to ensure high-quality images and error-free operation.
• Image Quality and Review:
  • Review CT images for quality and diagnostic standards.
  • Collaborate with radiologists to ensure images meet requirements.
  • Repeat or adjust scans as necessary to improve image quality.
• Patient Safety and Comfort:
  • Follow safety protocols to minimize radiation exposure, including using shielding and the lowest effective dose.
  • Maintain a sterile, clean environment and sanitize equipment between patients.
  • Ensure proper patient positioning to prevent injury or discomfort, especially for vulnerable patients.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions to contrast agents and alert healthcare providers if needed.
• Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work with physicians, radiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to determine appropriate imaging procedures.
  • Document patient information, scan parameters, contrast media, and complications in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Participate in patient care planning for complex cases.
• Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
  • Maintain, clean, and perform basic troubleshooting on CT scanners and associated equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections and calibration; alert maintenance staff to malfunctions.
  • Keep accurate logs of equipment use, maintenance, and repairs.
• Radiation Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow radiation safety protocols to protect patients and staff, including shielding and dosage guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (HIPAA, safety standards, Joint Commission guidelines).
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes related to radiation safety, patient privacy, and procedural guidelines.
• Documentation and Record Keeping:
  • Accurately document imaging procedures, patient information, and adverse events.
  • Ensure documentation complies with hospital policies and medical record-keeping regulations.
  • Assist with maintaining patient flow by providing quick turnaround times for imaging results.
• Patient Education and Support:
  • Provide education on aftercare following contrast injections, potential side effects, and follow-up procedures.
  • Address patient concerns about radiation exposure or claustrophobia.
  • Maintain patient privacy and dignity throughout the imaging process.
• Professional Development and Training:
  • Participate in continuing education to stay current with advancements in CT imaging technology and protocols.
  • Attend in-house training sessions and seminars on new imaging techniques or equipment.
  • Maintain professional certification and licensure, including continuing education requirements.
