Transporter - General Service

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients, visitors and patient related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Frequent interaction with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, door attendants and others.
  • Receive primary work assignments via an iPhone and pager.
  • Function independently and as a team member with minimal supervision or direction.
  • Possess knowledge with the use of a smart phone.
  • Proper input and management of transport requests may be required via computers and/or working with dispatch staff via telephone.
  • Stand and/or walk 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift and frequently push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the safe operation of multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment which require exceptional fine motor skills.
  • Disinfect equipment after each patient use and request maintenance as needed through the appropriate channels.
  • Perform wheelchair roundups to General Service storage locations or designated floors.
  • Transport patients who require the use of oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs and/or other special equipment, as well as assist patients in and out of wheelchairs/stretchers and perform correct patient identification by utilizing two patient identifiers (name and date of birth).
  • Confirm with staff and adhere to the medical isolation precautions and protocols.
  • Provide detailed verbal communication to appropriate staff during the drop off and pick up of patients in the inpatient setting.
  • Work days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends with rotating days off.
  • Attend meetings outside of their normal work schedule and/or assist in the training of new employees.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous customer service experience required.
  • Previous hospital, clinical or patient care experience preferred.
  • Able to work independently and in a group setting with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills as well as telephone and human relation skills to interact with patients, guests and staff.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable and stressful situations, while maintaining a calm and pleasant demeanor.
  • Strong problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Exceptional initiative and a proven ability to quickly respond to customer needs in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Basic computer skills are required, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Read, write, speak and understand English.
