About the role

DOWL is seeking a skilled and motivated Transportation Project Engineer 2 to take the lead on some of the most exciting and complex transportation infrastructure projects in the region. From bike paths and local roads to freeways and multimodal facilities, you’ll play a key role in shaping how communities move and connect. In this role, you’ll lead engineering calculations, alternatives analysis, and 2D/3D design efforts across high-impact projects. You’ll conduct site visits, produce CAD mark-ups, perform corridor modeling, write technical reports and specs, estimate costs, and interface directly with clients and stakeholders. You’ll also be responsible for scope and budget documentation and project coordination efforts from start to finish.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering calculations, alternatives analysis, and 2D/3D design efforts for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct site visits, produce CAD mark-ups, perform corridor modeling, and write technical reports and specifications.
  • Estimate costs and interface directly with clients and stakeholders.
  • Manage scope and budget documentation and project coordination from start to finish.
  • Provide quality control for technical reports, memos, specifications, construction quantity calculations, cost estimates, design documents, and construction plans.
  • Develop and understand budgets, schedules, and scopes; predict and deliver individual tasks within set levels of effort.
  • Break down complex projects into logical tasks and prioritize multiple assignments to deliver projects on time and on budget.
  • Mentor others on technical fundamentals, design codes, and project delivery.
  • Lead technical client project meetings and participate in project interviews.
  • Perform advanced technical tasks on complex, demanding projects with a high level of autonomy.
  • Review the work of others and provide technical guidance on proposals.
  • May perform assistant project management services or act as project engineer on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Oversee team operations, workflow, and ensure employees understand their duties (if in a supervisory role).
  • Recruit, hire, and train new employees; monitor productivity and provide feedback (if in a supervisory role).
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed (if in a supervisory role).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (required).
  • 10 years of experience (9 years with an advanced degree).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (required).
  • Valid driver’s license (required).

Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation Connect/OpenRoads.
  • Proficiency in 3D design and visualizations (e.g., Revit, Infraworks).
  • Proficiency in task-specific software (e.g., AutoTurn, GuideSign).
  • Advanced understanding of technical fundamentals in transportation engineering.
  • Expertise in interpreting and applying design codes (AASHTO, FHWA, local client standards).
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills; ability to follow and lead on large or complex projects.
  • Ability to develop budgets, schedules, and scopes for complex tasks and projects.
  • Excellent communication skills for client interactions and mentoring.
  • Ability to provide unique solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Experience in quality control technical checking of complex deliverables.
