Collaborating closely with our traffic engineers, you'll help develop and implement roadway improvements that solve immediate traffic challenges while supporting long-term community goals. DOWL is seeking a Transportation Project Engineer 1 to take on complex, high-profile projects that improve how people move every day. In this role, you’ll dive into a wide range of transportation design challenges—from local streets to major highways—using your expertise in CAD, 3D modeling, and engineering analysis. You’ll contribute to everything from technical reports and cost estimates to geometric layouts and stakeholder coordination. This is an opportunity for a detail-oriented problem-solver with a strong work ethic, a drive to keep learning, and the skills to bring smart transportation solutions to life.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and oversee the following independently:
    • Technical reports and memos
    • Specifications
    • Construction quantity calculations and cost estimates
    • Design documents and construction plans
    • Basic breakdown of costs and scope of work
    • Basic schedules
    • Proposal technical approach
  • Develop budgets and schedules for complex tasks; break down complex projects into logical tasks and prioritize multiple assignments to deliver projects on time and on budget.
  • Interpret, select, and employ design codes with advanced skill (AASHTO, FHWA, and local client standards) and mentor others on interpreting these codes.
  • Lead small teams (1-2 people) to complete challenging assignments; provide clear communication, direction, and responsibility for results.
  • Perform quality control technical checking of moderately complex deliverables.
  • Engage in frequent direct communications with clients to resolve technical issues on moderate to complex projects; lead client project meetings and understand appropriate messaging and legal risks.
  • Mentor others on technical tasks, skills, and project delivery.
  • Provide technical guidance on proposals.
  • Perform advanced levels of technical work on large, complex projects with a high level of autonomy; review the work of others and perform some assistant project management tasks.
  • Oversee team operations, including workflow, delegation, recruitment, training, and performance evaluations (if in a supervisory role).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree may reduce experience requirement by 1 year.
  • 6 years of experience (5 years with an advanced degree).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Valid driver’s license required (driving is an essential job function).

Skills

  • Software:
    • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) – Proficient
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D – Proficient
    • MicroStation Connect and OpenRoads – Proficient (if applicable)
    • 3D design and visualizations (e.g., Revit, Infraworks) – Developing (if applicable)
    • Task-specific software (e.g., AutoTurn, GuideSign) – Developing
  • Fully proficient understanding of technical fundamentals related to transportation engineering.
  • Advanced understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills; ability to mentor and provide constructive feedback.
  • Excellent client interaction and communication skills.
