Transportation Maint Tech III

TxDOT's Fort Worth District is seeking a General Transportation Technician based in Fort Worth. This role involves complex transportation operations and maintenance support, including contract maintenance, material inspection, roadway maintenance, and equipment operation. Training, tools, and uniforms are provided, with opportunities for growth within the agency.

Responsibilities

• Inspect traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Serve as a work crew project lead to ensure work meets project specifications.
• Train other employees.
• Provide support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
• Verify and process maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding.
• Operate complex heavy equipment such as motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, heavy asphalt paving machines, self-propelled asphalt distributors, and profiling/milling machines.
• Operate heavy equipment including front-end loaders (1.5 cubic yards or more), tractor-trailer haul trucks, large draglines, shovels, paint stripers, and dump trucks.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
• Assist during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills by sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, and helping the public.
• Perform other assigned job responsibilities.

Requirements

• 2 years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
• Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license (required to drive a state vehicle).
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with "N" endorsement at the time of application.

Skills

• Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance.
• Understanding of applicable plans, specifications, estimate preparation, review, processing, and compliance requirements.
• Familiarity with inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
• Knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
• Proficiency with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Ability to perform calculations for material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data, and engineering calculations.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
• Ability to operate light and heavy highway equipment.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Conditions of Employment

• Physically demanding role requiring a pre-employment physical.

• Required to work weekends, holidays, and hours outside of 8 AM to 5 PM.
• Exposure to inclement weather conditions.
• Must wear employer-provided personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.
• May be contacted during off-duty hours to report to work for emergency conditions within 60 minutes.
