About the role
Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs daily and routine road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. An employee assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways, and performs related work as required. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.
Responsibilities
Roadway Maintenance and Roadside functions
- All activities required for roadside maintenance.
- All roadway surface maintenance activities.
- Services and makes minor repairs to operating equipment.
- Provides traffic control.
- Performs basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities.
- Other duties as required.
Snow & Ice functions
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control.
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment.
- Perform pre-season snow route inspection and post storm cleanup.
- Perform winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
- Install, repair, maintain, and remove snow fences; replace mailboxes.
- Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
- Perform traffic control set-ups and/or provide notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
Requirements
- A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction is required at time of application. Must obtain tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire and a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire. License must be maintained throughout employment.
- One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
- OR: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered in lieu of work experience.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Final candidate will receive a contingent job offer and will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. If previously taken and passed, you may be exempt from retesting.
Additional Requirements
- Successful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check.
- Background investigation components may include: SEMA4 Records Check, Criminal History Check, Employment Reference Check, Education/License Verification, and Driver's License Check.
- This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver's License, submitting to a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative test results), being subject to future random drug and alcohol testing, and being registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines (MDMA, MDA, and MDEA), and acetyl morphine (6-AM).
- Incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
Physical Requirements
- Work nights; may be required to work outside exposed to weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis.
- Drive a motor vehicle on the roadway and roadsides.
- Periodically walk on even and uneven sloping ground.
- Frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting).
- Operate machinery and equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures.
- Infrequently move between 75 and 100 pounds and frequently move 50 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
- Wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
- Exposure to odors from herbicides and products used in roadway reconstruction, such as bituminous or patchwork products/processes.
Schedule
- Day Shift, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm, summer schedule and 7:00 am - 3:30 pm winter schedule.
- Winter snow & ice shift and emergency call-in list as needed.
- Days of Work: Monday - Thursday, summer schedule, and Monday - Friday winter schedule.
Pay
$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,597 - $65,981 / annually
