Full-time, unlimited (permanent) position within the Transportation Department, District 7 – AFSCME bargaining unit.
About the role
The Transportation Generalist performs a wide range of roadway, roadside, and winter-maintenance duties to ensure safe, functional, and well-maintained state highways and rights-of-way.
Responsibilities
- Road and Surface/Roadside Maintenance
- Maintain and reconstruct roadways, shoulders, and rights-of-way using gravel, bituminous, and concrete materials.
- Maintain traffic barriers, perform bituminous road repair, clean culverts, and repair guardrails.
- Install catch basins, place and remove Adopt-A-Highway bags, and perform drainage and shoulder repair.
- Operate tractor mowers, small rollers, and other equipment for preventive maintenance on roadways.
- Set up and maintain traffic control in high-volume areas according to the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual.
- Perform landscaping duties: planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, and removing trees, grass, shrubs, and brush; chipping tree limbs and grinding/removing stumps.
- Snow and Ice Control
- Remove snow and ice from roadways, shoulders, and rights-of-way; widen roadways after large snow accumulations.
- Apply anti-icing and de-icing chemicals under slippery conditions; remove frozen ice and material from culverts.
- Conduct night or dawn patrols for snow and ice management.
- Prepare, inspect, and maintain winter equipment, including snowplows, cutting edges, and sanders; clean equipment post-storm.
- Perform preseason snow route inspections and post-storm cleanup, including sweeping bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
- Maintain accurate documentation of snow and ice data for inventory and resource management reporting.
Requirements
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.
- One year of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Snow and ice control
- Soils or road surface maintenance
- Roadside or bridge maintenance
- Sign installation/repair
- Related activities such as roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience.
- Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (minimum 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) may substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.
- Pass a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test (Math: level 3 or higher; Reading: level 4 or higher) as a contingent job offer requirement. Previous test passers may be exempt.
- Pass past-employer reference checks, criminal history checks, and a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative results).
- Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and be subject to future random drug and alcohol testing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous MnDOT experience as a laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
Pay
$25.19 – $31.60 per hour; $52,596 – $65,980 annually.

- Day shift, Monday through Friday.
- No travel required.
