TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II
About the role
The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) District I is currently recruiting for a Transportation Engineering Technician II in Wicomico County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only.
Responsibilities
- Perform transportation engineering surveys, inspections, design, materials testing, data collection, minor traffic studies and administrative duties.
- Inspect construction and maintenance projects.
- Perform tests on soil and materials.
- Evaluate methods for maintenance operations.
- Serve on a survey crew.
- Draft design details, maintenance contract specifications and construction notes.
- Calculate quantities for construction projects and maintenance activities.
- Plans, maps, or right of way plats.
- Collect and record traffic and planning data.
Employees in this class do not supervise but may provide instructions to less experienced employees. Work is performed under the supervision of an engineer, or higher-level technical employee. Working conditions vary depending on assignments and are performed in the office or in the field during survey and inspection assignments with exposure to varying weather conditions and rough terrain and requirements for walking, standing, bending, and lifting loads weighing up to 80 lbs.; may require working in proximity with traffic on Maryland highways; requires hand/eye coordination in the efficient operation of computers and other office machines, surveys and other equipment.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
- Experience: One year of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
- Preferred Qualification: Must possess basic computer skills.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of the inspections conducted on maintenance and construction projects.
Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for the year of the required experience. Applicants who possess an Associates Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met the experience requirement.
