Job Responsibilities
- Inspects hazardous trees on the right-of-way and follows departmental policy in the removal.
- Affords assistance in determining if SCDOT will complete the work or if the work is beyond the unit’s capability.
- Investigates illegal encroachment onto the right-of-way and follows department policy on the removal.
- Encroachment inspections include signs, mailboxes, and abandoned vehicles.
- Processes encroachment permit work; processes road inventories and damage claims.
- Verifies field quantities for pay estimates.
- Reviews, inspects, and recommends for approval residential encroachment permits.
- Conducts field inspections for moderate level contracts such as roadway mowing, vegetation, and/or tree removal, and street sweeping when field measurements for payment are required.
- Performs routine inspections of roadways to include low/high shoulders, pavement markings, signs, potholes, ditches, and other roadway defects.
- Affords assistance in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12-hour shifts.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
- A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Employee must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
- The physical demands for the essential functions involve frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
- May require occasional exposure to noise.
- May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
