About the role

TxDOT's Houston District Bridge Design Section is looking for a new Bridge Design Detailer. This position will work within our design team to model and detail new bridges as well as bridge rehabilitation for a variety of transportation projects throughout the Houston District's 6-county area. Responsibilities

Transportation Engineer Specialist I

  • Assists in planning and coordinating office operations
  • Performs advanced and specialized design work
  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans
  • Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors
  • Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design
  • Performs field work
  • Uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Transportation Engineer Specialist II (includes all duties listed above, plus the following)

  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications
  • May assist in planning and coordinating office operations
  • Trains less experienced technicians
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer Specialist I

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
  • Experience: 6 years drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Transportation Engineer Specialist II

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
  • Experience: 7 years drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous detailing experience in CAD environments such as Bentley's MicroStation
  • Familiarity with developing structural details and plan sheets under the guidance of a licensed engineer
  • Ability to work within CAD environments containing complex 2D or 3D Models and produce applicable detail sheets
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate professionally
  • Self-motivated to learn new skills
  • Ability to read and understand plans and construction sequences

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other devices
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Reaching - extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Fingering - picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
