About the role

The Senior Resident Engineer (SRE) is the unit supervisor of two units within the District. The SRE provides direct oversight and supervision of the unit(s) and all unit staff, offering engineering direction for the administration and inspection of multiple, complex construction contracts/projects. This role ensures work performed conforms with construction plans and specifications and complies with local, state, and federal requirements. The SRE is responsible for ensuring compliance with engineering practices, performing administrative duties including personnel and resource management, initiating and monitoring safe work processes, and ensuring training requirements are fulfilled for self and staff. The SRE also oversees and supervises consultant engineering services and assists in coordination during winter storm events and/or emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and technical direction for the administration of multiple, complex construction contracts to ensure work meets design intent and results in functional, durable projects.
  • Monitor and enforce safety processes.
  • Perform administrative duties including personnel management, evaluation, discipline, hiring, termination, and guidance of subordinate personnel in accordance with department policies.
  • Set work standards within the unit to achieve maximum organizational efficiency and accomplish district and division objectives related to construction processes on ADOT projects.
  • Assist in coordination of roadblocks and other supplemental duties during winter storm events and/or emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Three to five years of work-related experience in a technical-level staff position involving engineering analysis and highway construction.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience.
  • A valid Arizona Professional Engineer (PE) license is required. Candidates holding an active PE in another state must meet Arizona Technical Board of Registration requirements and attain an Arizona PE within 6 months of employment start date.
  • This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function. Employees must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete required training, and pass driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended.
  • Employees driving on state business must maintain acceptable driving records and complete required driver training. If operating a personally owned vehicle, statutorily required liability insurance must be maintained.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Civil Engineering theory and practices.
  • All applicable Federal and State statutes, agency standards, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to the area of assignment.
  • Methods, procedures, and techniques utilized in management of assigned resources.
  • Computer applications relevant to the area of assignment.
  • Safety practices and applications of departmental policies and procedures.

Skills in:

  • Interpreting and analyzing a wide range of technical, complex engineering data.
  • Developing and implementing appropriate standards, procedures, and priorities related to the area of assignment.
  • Supervision and leadership.
  • Interpersonal relations with subordinate personnel, other governmental agencies, contractors, consultants, and the public.
  • Oral and written communication.
  • Scheduling available staff to cover needs and minimize overtime.

Ability to:

  • Review and analyze engineering-related materials, reports, documents, plans, and specifications.
  • Provide engineering-related resolutions.
  • Interact with multiple federal, state, and local entities.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing in a positive and professional manner.
  • Provide leadership and set direction for a staff of multiple full-time employees and consultant technicians.
  • Coach and develop employees, including continuous improvement practices and principles.

Pay

Salary range: $101,700.00 - $111,700.00. Anticipated starting salary: $106,700.00. This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.
