Primary Function
The Transportation Engineer III performs moderately complex transportation design engineering work with a focus on state roadway projects. This role requires full competency in conventional engineering practices and the ability to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard design techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop roadway design plans in accordance with client standards, including alignments, profiles, cross sections, and quantities
- Utilize MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) for 3D modeling and plan production
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, specifications, and supporting documentation
- Ensure all work products meet client criteria, scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements
- Coverage with multidisciplinary teams including drainage, traffic, and structures
- Review design for constructability, sequencing, and field implementation considerations
- Support design-build and design-bid-build project delivery, adapting to project-specific requirements
- Assist with technical reports, proposals, and engineering analyses
- Provide guidance to junior engineers, designers, and CADD staff
- Participate in QA/QC reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards
- May support construction-phase services, including responding to RFIs and reviewing submittals
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 4–6+ years of transportation/roadway design experience
- Demonstrated experience working on FDOT projects and standards (Districts 1, 3, 4, or 5 preferred)
- Strong proficiency in MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD)
- Ability to independently perform roadway design and plan production
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida (or ability to obtain)
- Experience supporting design-build project delivery
- Familiarity with Central Florida municipal and county clients (e.g., Orange County, Seminole County, St. Lucie County)
- Experience coordinating with FDOT disciplines such as drainage, traffic, and utilities
