About the role

TxDOT's Fort Worth District seeks a Transportation Engineer III or IV to join our team in Fort Worth, TX. The district boasts a workforce of over 12,000 employees statewide.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
  • Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for complex transportation projects.
  • Coordinates on design schematics, assists with capacity and level of service studies and reviews in-house and consultant traffic control/traffic management/intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plans and projects.
  • Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, the FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers and local entities.
  • Coordinates with local officials on critical findings involving structures which are not under state jurisdictions to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.
  • Reviews and supports Standard Operating Procedures for maintaining and archiving project schedules; managing resources; managing budgets; managing project changes, and managing quality performance measurements.
  • Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Experience: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Licensed Prof Engineer* If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification. For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.

  • Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Transportation Engineer III: Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Transportation Engineer IV: Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Geometric design relationships to traffic operations, maintenance and construction
Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
Pavement concepts, methods, policies and requirements
Cost estimating and cost controls
Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
Performing basic design and drafting
Monitoring the status and progress of projects
Initiates and supports quality management activities and performance management measures to provide the highest quality products and services that meet the needs and requirements of internal and external customers
