Transportation Engineer II, or III - Digital Delivery - Design Division - Austin, TX
About the role
The Texas Department of Transportation's Design Division is seeking a Transportation Engineer to join our innovative Digital Delivery Section. This person will work with engineers, EAs, and analysts on a variety of topics, including developing processes to advance the Digital Delivery Program.
The Digital Delivery Program works towards utilizing models, created in the design process, in construction in lieu of traditional paper or pdf plan sheets, then utilizing construction data for creating a digital twin of the TxDOT system. As part of this job, this person will gain knowledge in all aspects of the project development process including survey, design, construction inspection, hydrology, hydraulics, environmental, and review.
Responsibilities
Transportation Engineer II responsibilities include:
- Assist with development of processes, procedures, and pilots for design, construction, hydraulics, environmental, bridge, traffic, letting, etc. for TxDOT's Digital Delivery Program.
- Develop, recommend, and implement modifications as necessary for continual improvement to existing program of responsibility.
- Perform complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Assist project managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines.
- Assist with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
- Interpret the Utility Accommodation Policy.
- Perform and/or document in-house research studies.
- Provide technical expertise in planning, coordinating, maintaining and operating traffic management systems TxDOT's transportation system.
Transportation Engineer III responsibilities include all of the above, plus:
- Oversee construction project traffic control plans; periodically review traffic control devices with Area Engineers.
- Provide design engineering support for districts in project development.
- Assess and report actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projects.
- Develop technical presentations and represent TxDOT.
- Act as consultant to staff engineers to coordinate construction operations.
Requirements
Minimum qualifications for Transportation Engineer II:
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
- 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- TX Licensed Prof Engineer* Safety Impact Certificate.
Minimum qualifications for Transportation Engineer III:
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
- 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- TX Licensed Prof Engineer* Safety Impact Certificate.
Skills
Competencies for Transportation Engineer II:

Pay
Salary Range:
- Transportation Engineer II: $80,000.00 - $105,000.00.
- Transportation Engineer III: $92,000.00 - $112,000.00.
